Duryodhana Vadham - Vayaskara Moos(1841 to 1902) BACK
This story spreads through various portions of Mahabharatha leading to and culminating in the death of Duryodhana which also ends the war.
Bhanumati, Duryodhana's wife is very jealous of the beautiful palace which Pandavas built at Indraprastha. Duryodhana decides to visit this palace with his brothers. When they reach there, they fall into water where they think that there is no water. Then they raise their skirts thinking there is water where there is no water. On seeing this Bhima laughs. Panchali actually did not laugh but was amused. Duryodhana reports to his uncle Shakuni that Panchali laughed at him while at Indraprastha. Shakuni unfolds a plan to call Yudhishtira for a dice game and beat him by fraud. During the dice game not only Yudhishtira is beaten but he along with his wife and brothers become slaves to Duryodhana. Panchali is dragged out by her hair and insulted by Dussasana. She vows to tie her hair with the blood of Dussasana. On hearing this Dhritharashtra is terrified and orders them to be freed. Duryodhana orders that they can go on condition that they live in forests for 12 years and spend another year incognito. The Pandavas agree and file out of Hastinapura with thier wife.
When the stipulated thirteen years are over Yudhishtira sends Krishna to Duryodhana asking for anything between half the kingdom or just one good house for all the Pandavas to live together at Hastinapura. However as he was preparing to go Panchali shows her hair to Krishna indicating her desire to get it tied with Dussasana's blood. Krishna gets the message.
Krishna goes to Hastinapura and tells Duryodhana to give half the kingdom. Duryodhana will not give. He will not give a single house or not even space for pricking a needle. War is declared and Krishna somehow escapes and comes back. The killing of Dussasaa is shown with double Chenda and double Maddalam. Draupadi's hair is tied with Dussasana's blood. Duryodhana is also killed. Sometimes this scene is not shown because it doesn't create the desired affect since the climax is that of drawing Dussana's blood. The last scene is that of Bhima being blessed by Krishna who also tells him his duty to perform death ceremonies to relatives killed in battle.
In this story Pandavas and Krishna are Pacha vesham, Duryodhana is Kathi, Dussasana is Red Beard, Shakuni is Minuku with a black beard, Panchali and Bhanumathi are Minuku. Bhima comes in a different makeup during the killing of Dussasana which creates a better affect.
