Ambarisha Charitham - Ashwathy Thirunal(1756 to 1794)                                                                       BACK

This is a good action packed story from Bhagavatha giving a lot of fun for the audience.

Ambareesha was a noble king of Ayodhya. Once he asks Kula Guru Vasishta what he should do to serve Vishnu. Vasishta says that he should keep Dwadashi Vrita. Dwadasi is the twelth day of the moon next to Ekadasi the eleventh day of moon. This vritha is an extension of Ekadasi Vrita where the devotee breaks his fast by taking water (Paranam) on Dwadasi day.

While he was so ruling the country the Greeks (Yavanas) attack the city. The king goes to war and defeats the Greeks. One day the great sage Durvasav comes to meet the king. It was a Dwadasi day. Durvasav goes to take bath after which both would take Paranam(breaking the fast with water). But Durvasav did not return from bath. After waiting for a long time as per the advise of a brahmin he takes Paranam. Soon Durvsav comes along and sees that the King has taken Paranam. This was an insult to the Sage. The king tried to explain his behaviour. He tried to passify the sage. But the Sage's anger increased and he created a terrible demoness called Kritya and sent her at the king to cut off his head. Immediately Sudarsana, the divine disc of Maha Vishnu came in between and cut off the head of Kritya and started chasing Durvasav.

Durvasav ran to Brahma's abode, but Brahma told he could do nothing about it. Chased by Sudarshana he ran to Shiva and he also could not do anything about it. Again chased by Sudarshana he ran to Vishnu. Vishnu asked him to go back to Ambarisha and ask his pardon. Again chased by Sudarshana, Durvasav went back to Ambarisha and asked his pardon upon which Sudarshana retires end ending his agony. Durvasav blesses Ambareesha.

In this story Ambareesha is Pacha vesham, Kritya is a huge vesha like Bhadrakali, Sudarsana is Red Beard and Durvasav, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva have their regular makeups under the general group of Minuku.
