Thorana Yudham - Kottarakara Thampuran(1555 to 1605) BACK
This story is taken from Ramayana and is a continuation of Balivadham. Hanuman plays a major role in this play.
Months after Bali was killed Sugriva does not make any move to search for Sita. Lakshmana goes to Kishkindha in an angry mood. However Thara, the former wife of Sugriva, consoles him and simulataneously asks Sugriva to organise search armies. Sugriva sends search armies to diferent places to find Sita. Angada, Jambavan, Hanuman and their army go towards the south. Rama hands over his ring to Hanuman thinking that Hanuman was most likely to meet Sita. On their way they see Sambati and Swayamprabha. They give indications to the location where Sita can be found.
Hanuman jumps (almost like a flight) over the sea to Lanka. On the way he is attacked many times, but each time he escapes by his wit and wisdom. He meets Lankalakshmi at the entrance to Ravana's castle who totally refuses entry to Hanuman. He hits Lankalakshmi who being emancipated goes to heaven. Then Hanuman searchig for Sita sees her under a tree in Ashokavana. He sits at the top of the tree. At that time Ravana comes along and cajoles Sita to marry him. However Sita strongly refuses. At that time Mandodari, the first wife of Ravana and queen of Lanka, comes along and takes back Ravana. Trijata tells Sita about her dream in which Rama comes to rescue her. Hanuman comes down from the tree and meets Sita. He gives the ring to Sita and takes back her jewelled hairpin as proof of seeing her.
Then Hanuman starts to destroy Ashokavana, whereat he is arrested and taken to Ravana's court. As a punishment they set fire to Hanuman's tail. However Hanuman jumps up and sets fire to the tall buildings of Lanka before he departs to the place where Jambavan and his friends are waiting for him.
