Kathakali emanated in the 16th century taking inspiration from Koodiyattam, a remnant of ancient Sanskrit drama and a 12th century Sanskrit musical called GeethaGovindam. It improved and evolved continuously. At the actor level, it was defined by Premkumar(ex Shantiniketan) as the outward expression of inward feelings through the medium of bodily movements. But, there is more to it. It mixes the best of literature, opera, dance, epics, music, percussion, makeup, costumes, facial expressions, body movements and a philosophy which says-If you have conquered your ego(as cause of egotism), you have conquered all. Kathakali continues to evolve..... While Kathakali performances are taking place throughout the world, there is no documentation with respect to these performances.
